Google has just released Google Glass kernel source code today which is Linux specific. This is only half of the code for Google Glass is opened for public / developers today. Android uses Linux kernel to run and which is operating under GPLv2 license and there is another part the Android codes which is licensed under Apache license. Google Glass Project team didn’t open the source code under Apache license yet. Developers still need to wait few more days for that.
The famous iPhone jailbreaker and founder of Cydia store Jay Freeman (saurik) has posted on twitter that he has jailbroken Google Glass what he bought from Google recently. The Glass is running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich
which is a quiet old Android OS now. Google actually left the Glass to unlock the bootloader easily using fastboot oem unlock command. But he did not do it using this command/s. He did it using exploits which was easy for him to do it as the Glass is running on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and this version of Android has got some bug and that makes it easy to exploit even on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
But this doesn’t guaranty to root or permanent root. But rooting a Google Glass is easy, said Glass Developers. Glass source code is now live at code.google.com and developers can start hacking right away using the kernel codes at the moment and modify the Android OS inside it to add more feature.
If you didn’t know yet, you can use ADB (Android Debugging Bridge) commands for your Glass, just enable the debug mode. Android now have another platform to go ahead with, Glass. And there should be more and more Glass specific apps. The New York Times has already got an app for Glass users. Google has Gmail and evernote app. There is rumour going around that Twitter is releasing their Glass specific twitter app soon or in the works actually.
According to Ars Technica, Google has released the specific Linux source code that is included with the augmented reality device, based on Android. However, the source code related to Google Glass has been published in two parts: on the one hand, changes in the Linux kernel are distributed under the free software license GPLv2, as well as Linux, it is distributed under the Apache license. In the case of Glass, only the Linux code has been released.
With the release of Google Glass source code today Google actually did a nice help for the development of the Glass and its apps. We can just wait for Google to release the rest of the code soon.
