Google has unveiled the latest technology today, balloon-powered internet access called ‘Project Loon‘. This project of Google will help the people in the rural and remote areas which doesn’t have proper internet access. The internet speed will be comparable to 3G internet connection. Google started the project balloon-powered internet five years ago and since then the search engine giant was working behind every curious eye. Google wants to connect people of the whole world using internet and they found this idea as cost effective option to success their mission.
Today they have announced that they started a pilot project in New Zealand with 30 balloons and 50 testers. Google has created a system to deliver fast internet using the balloons and sending them twice as high as commercial planes and carried by the wind. In the Project Loon page Google has described how does it work and all the details. This project is still experimental. Hopefully Google will get some nice results out of it and expand it globally very soon. There are so many countries in the world with poor internet connection. Maximum people living in the remote area doesn’t have any proper internet connection. Or perhaps using the slow speed mobile internet connection like GPRS, EDGE. While we are using 4G LTE internet in some of the developed countries, 3G service is still not covered everywhere.
The balloons will be flying in the stratosphere circling the area. Even the the balloons can control their movement using the panels and float on the air. And will be serving internet to its users for a 40km in diameter. Users will use a special antenna in their house to receive the internet signal and get online using these balloon network. The balloon’s will be sent to a predefined location which Google already prepared. Google used some algorithms to set these courses. Interestingly these Balloon-powered internet access will be powered by the sun. Yes, all the balloons has got solar panel to get power for its operation.
Want to be a pilot tester of this project loon? At present Google is accepting applications to become a pilot tester from New Zealand. Google is also hosting ‘Festival of Flight’ on 16th June tomorrow. This is a free entry, you can bring your family to meet the team behind this ‘Project Loon’ and learn more about the project. To register your interest to become a Project Loon Pilot tester if you are from New Zealand and to know more visit google.com/loon/where.
