In February 2012 Raspberry Pi Foundation started selling world’s smallest computer Raspberry Pi. A credit-card size computer which can run Linux OS. The foundation sold about 30 million units of this amazing computer board. You can buy a Raspberry Pi model B+ for a mere $35 or £30.
The first model came with ARM 700 MHz processor, 256 MB RAM, 2x USB ports, HDMI out, TV out, Audio out, micro USB power port, Ethernet and a full-sized SD card slot for the OS. Not the best specs in the market, but nobody delivered it before Eben Upton in this form factor. Since released, the Pi’s been selling like hotcakes around the world. Raspberry Pi Foundation partnered with Element14 and RS Components to distribute these mighty little computers. Now, you can get it from other retailers and from online stores.
Later, the foundation released model B with RAM size increase to 512 MB. Plenty schools got them for their students in the class room. A cheap and easy way to learn programming. You can even do a full installation of WordPress and run it from here.
The latest model Raspberry Pi B+ released with refreshed board design and low power consumption than the earlier models. It now comes with 4x USB ports instead of 2. More room to connect more devices like Keyboard, Mouse, WiFi, Bluetooth, USB Drives and more. The SD card slot replaced by a microSD card. 8 GB Class 6 or Class 10 cards recommended to use for faster system. The board now fitted with 40 pin GPIO connector and CSI camera and DSI display ports. This adds up increased usability and running more hobby projects.
Looking for where to start? The raspberrypi.org website is the only thing you need. They have plenty of resources and forum. All the OS compiled for Raspberry Pi available in the downloads section. And, forgot to add that, everything is NOOB friendly. You can get a nice box for your Pi for £5-£10 on Amazon or Ebay.
