Twitter has announced that they are removing the 140 character limit from Direct Messages (DM). This new feature will go live next month, on July 2015. There was always a limit on how many characters you could send via DM. So, there will be no limit and you can send as many as 10,000 characters (sounds like unlimited). Twitter made it official just yesterday July 11, 2015 morning on their developers blog.
Twitter already enabled uploading videos natively back in January. Recently, they just made the service much better, letting you upload larger video files natively.
Developers can start playing with their app to send and receive more than 140 characters DM. Twitter cooked some nice REST API and Streaming API on their oven to make the new features to take effect. If you are an Twitter app developer and want to use the new feature, at the moment you can integrate the new APIs in your app. But the new feature will be working once Twitter launch it next month. All you can do now is, prepare and get ready. Once they release, your app will be working fine.
Twitter is available on most of the platforms. There is an app for different OS users and they have been updating the apps continuously. We should see updates related to removing 140 character limit from DMs as soon as next month. And, you will be able to send unlimited character DMs through Twitter.
