Google released a brand new camera app, Google Camera recently in the Play Store. The app works with Android 4.4+ devices only at the moment. One of the best feature of this new camera app is to take Lens Blur photos, something like an SLR feature. This is really a cool new feature for the Android camera images.
Rafał Lindemann, a Polish developer came up with a brilliant idea to create 3D Parallax effect with the Lens Blur photos. He made an open source tool for that. The tool extracts depth map and original from photos made with Google Camera’s Lens Blur. Amazing thing is you don’t need a 3D phone or display to see the depth of 3D.
Depthy works with Chrome browser on your Android phone or in your computer. And, reported to work with Firefox browser as well. All you need to do is, just point your browser to depthy.me. Load a Lens Blur photo and it will be automatically processed. If you are using your Android phone, after processing move your phone to see the 3D effect. You can disable the blurriness from the photo. Use hypnotize or dramatize for the 3D animation of your amazing picture. Play with the three options for different look.
Some of the browsers doesn’t support this tool for lacking of WebGL. You need to make sure the browser you are using supports WebGL. Otherwise, you will get error messages. At present there is no way that you can export the image as .gif or save it for later viewing pleasure. The developer is working hard and there will be a .gif export feature soon. For now, you can use GifCam to record the animation and export it as .gif. If you are looking for the sources of this tool, head over to GitHub. Enjoy DEPTHY!
