Nexus 5 in 64GB? Are you kidding me?
Nope, you heard it right. It’s just not official. Nexus 5 released end of 2013 with 16/32GB internal storage options without possibility to extend with a microSD card, as none of the Nexus phones has any expandable storage facility. However, things didn’t stop there. However, someone didn’t like this 16/32GB boundary and he bought himself a 64GB eMMC to increase the memory. It is working perfectly fine in his Red Nexus 5. XDA Developer member Kapetz2 from Kiev, Ukraine has done this amazing hardware mod and enjoying his faster Nexus 5.
This is not an easy mod that every users can do. This one requires some special set of skills including BGA shouldering and managing partition tables. Kapetz2 bought a Samsung 64GB eMMC 5.0 for $30 to increase the memory and started his project. Nexus 5 originally came with eMMC 4.5 which has speed up to 200 MB/s where eMMC 5.0 delivers up to 400 MB/s meaning faster speed. He did a good job replacing the memory chip and phone was working properly except showing only 32GB of storage and not 64GB, which is the main goal for this mod. Then he started a thread on XDA Forum 2nd of April 2016 to get some help with re-partitioning the internal storage. Nexus 5 doesn’t have any support for 64GB memory as there wasn’t any.
There were some replies made to the forum post with some useful answers and links from the community. On 13th April Kapetz2 announced that finally its working and 100% tested. He posted a picture of him holding the phone on bootloader mode displaying 64GB. Now, he is the owner of the fastest Nexus 5 on earth. The AnTuTu benchmark produced better result on UX for the faster read and write speed of the memory card.
The method is incredible and tempting. However, there is no detailed tutorial on how to do this. But, he has created an image gallery that can be accessed through this link. Hopefully, the developer will make up a tutorial on how to do this in his free time.
What do you think about this cool mod? Are you tempted? Well, I am.
