Root your PiPO M9 3G tablet and install rooted ROM the easiest way. My PiPo M9 3G 10 inch tablet arrived yesterday by post from from Singapore. It came with pre-installed Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean version. The tablet didn’t come rooted. There’s so much possibility in this fast quad-core tablet if you can root it. I’m not a developer, but a power user with root.
So, I started looking how to root the tablet and install a custom MOD my tablet. Went through a lot of things until today. Finally an hour ago I finished rooting my tablet, after trying a lot different guides, tutorials. If you are as lucky as me you might have to handle some trouble to get the drivers working with your PC. I couldn’t install all the drivers of PiPO M9 3G tablet on my Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7. But I managed to get root on tablet. You can ignore it but no adb access on my one now which I don’t mind at the moment.
If you follow the steps below to root your tablet and install a rooted Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean ROM, end of this post you will get yourself a rooted and powerful Android tablet running the latest Android version. Here you will get the links and resources to root your PiPO M9 3G new version of pcb 10.1 inch tablet.
[Before you proceed more, just to let you know that I’m not responsible for your device whatever happens. You are responsible for your device. I did on my one and everything went OK. Hope, so is yours. All the credit goes to the Developers and Google]
Root Your PiPO M9 3G Tablet – Prepare and Download
We will be using Pipo M9 Max 4.2.2 RileyROM 1.5, comes with everything in a zip file. You can download it from their site or from this mirror. If you have any other model of PiPO M9 still you can download it from there. The developer Randy from Freaktab has built ROM for only Wi-Fi and built-in 3G and Wi-Fi version of PiPO M9 3G WCDMA version. Download as your tablet’s version. Remember, this is for the new pcb board, will not work with the old one. You will be needing the drivers. Grab the RK3188 PiPO M9 3G USB Driver from here, will work with Rockchip 3188 devices.
Update 27/06/13: Riley ROM v1.6 for this tablet is here. The instructions remain the same as this.
Now create a new folder and put both of the downloaded zip files in the same folder. Extract them, so, you will get RK3188 Driver for the drivers and another one for the ROM and tools to finish our job. Inside the RileyROM_1.5 folder you will get a file named RKAndroidTool.exe which is the main flasher file along with few other files and folders.

Hi
I have 4 Pipo M9 with 3G on route from China.
Am very upset to find out I bought 4.1.1 just before 4.2.2 is sold as of June 9th.
How can I upgrade from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 before I start installing and setting the new tablets?
Many tnx
Israel from Israel
Admin says
Hi Kass
There’s no difference if you have bought on with Android 4.1.1 or 4.2.2. Mine came with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean installed but I didn’t keep it, instead I rooted and installed a rooted Android 4.2.2 ROM. Just download and follow the instructions on this post to upgrade your OS.
Hope it helps.

Thanks so much.
I still don’t know what “rooting” means, how is different from a “normal” upgrade?
Admin says
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_rooting here you can find the technical info about rooting. If you follow the instructions here your device will be rooted.

Hi there. I followed your guide, but the flash never finished (drivers all installed correctly Win7 x64)…it got as far as INFO:Run OK, but the device did not reboot…not sure what to do next? Please help, thank you.
Admin says
I’m sorry to hear that it didn’t work for you. Which model of the tablet you are using? Mine worked well and I’m still using it. Perhaps you can go to Freaktab forum and ask it there, and someone might help you.
David Lesak says
Hi, my model is the Wi-Fi Pipo M9, but so far I do not know whether it is the V1 or 2 mainboard, although it came pre-installed with JB 4.2.2, so I am inclined to think that it is a recent model….
I am looking into a couple of options, one is Shuame, and the other is the Universal Android Root…both look interesting and simple too.
ISRAEL KASS says
I forgot most important.
Does this version of Android 4.2.2 include the Hebrew language? Otherwise I cannot use it….
Admin says
Yep, it does come with Hebrew language.

Just got hold of a pipo m6 (not 3g). It’s running 4.2.2. What are the noticeable differences to your system?
Admin says
All I can say its fast & smooth. 3G works fine. Running this rooted ROM. CyanogenMOD ROM would be nice with this tablet. Still a lot of things are not present in this ROM. Need more development.
sean1021 says
Thanks. What have you lost that would be necessary for everyday use?
Admin says
Tablet is not my main device. The reason I have this tablet its going fine with it. No problem at all :)
What is your opinion about your tablet?
sean1021 says
I’ve had it for a day and a half, so I haven’t pushed it to its limit. Retina display is very crisp, interface is easy enough to get used to. Scored 13500+ on Antutu. Design is very impressive and build is solid.
All I know about rooting, I have picked up in the last 2 weeks so I’m apprehensive. I jus want to be able to take advantage of all its features.
Admin says
@ David Lesak this ROM is not for you. This is for the 3G model.
David Lesak says
Thank you, but that is irrelevant – I should be able to use this method to flash any ROM or custom recovery – I need to get to that point from where I am now…
Admin says
Yeah, you are right. But, I’m sorry, can’t give you any solution about this, unless I had the model in hand. You can check their forum for help.
Zaatour36 says
nice, I’ll try it as soon as I get mine :)
MaGeek says
@David Lesak or anyone who get stuck on reboot after flash.
I had the same problem and solved it.
You’ve to go back in flashmode by clicking the “reboot2flash” button on the RKAT interface, verify that you’re in flashmode in Rockchip Batch Tool (green color) or just trust the RKAT pop up and press ok.
Press the “EraseIDB” button in RKAT, then press flash button again. Wait the end of installation. The tab should reboot into recovery. Swipe the screen to select “wipe cache partition”, press power button. Select “reboot system now”, and press power button again.
Your tab should boot properly into your freshly installed system :-)
Once done, setup your system and account, go into storage menu and mount SD storage (say ok to format your SD card if it’s seen as corrupted), then launch the “reboot” app, grant root access, and reboot into recovery to do a fresh backup of your new system.
A+,

You cant use this ROM for your U1 as the chipset is different from the M9 (RK3066 and RK3188) you risk bricking your tablet!!!

My pipo m9 pro has samsung exynos 4412 CPU model not the RK3188…which could explain why you most excellent guide does not work for me
Juris says
Hello, my Pipo M9pro 3g is with exynos 4412 as well, according Antutu benchmark. I was not sure whether it was true, because all m9s have rk3188. So, I tried to upgrade it with latest Pipo firmware, now it is brick.
Anyone has this problem as well?
Admin says
I didn’t have any problem with my one. As it does have RK3188 and the firmware is made for this only. Exynos or other chipset not supported. Find the factory firmware and try to flash it and follow their instructions properly. Hope it will help.
Ch4rlie says
Hi,
my pipo has got exynos 4412 cpu too. Did you unbrick yours?!
Maybe you have more info about how to root pipo m9pro 3g with exynos cpu.
I will be so greatful for your answer
Juris says
Hello, this is error of Antutu -actually its RK3188. You can use Pipo m9 tools – here is the link http://dragondevs.com/index.php/topic/1765-all-in-one-pipo-m9-tools-v20/ Probably you will have to register. Software is in russian, but it is very easy – first button is for installation of ABD driver, second is for installation on RK3188 driver, third is for rooting, 4th is for recovery patching.
No, mine is still a brick. Did not have time for unbricking.
Ch4rlie says
Hi,
Thanks for that link. This program is great and works. I rooted my pipo.
Many thanks for sharing with that.

Hi all, I have a problem that so far has not been covered in the forum. My wife’s Pipo M9 running Android 4.2.2 will not charge, I bought 2 of them one works perfect and I couldn’t be more pleased, however the other will not charge and now is completely flat, push connector in and there is no red light, have tried twisting and turning but no good, not sure if I should attempt to take the back off, if I can work out how. any ideas much appreciated.
Thanks
Juris says
check the adapter from Chinese plug to euro or whatever you have- have seen cases when this high-tech product is guilty. Try to use charger from other Pipo.
Clive says
Thank you for getting back. Sorry, should have said, I do have 2 of these so have tried the other charger, something I forgot to mention, when trying to charge the adapter starts to flash on and off. Bought from Banggood HK they have asked me to send it back, but quite expensive, that’s why I was thinking of taking the back off and having a look, only bought them last May, other one is perfect.
John says
I have the non 3G version, will it work for me?
Admin says
I wouldn’t use it for the non 3G version. You have to use the files intended for your tablet.
